The theme of CITYNET Yokohama Congress 2009 is “Harmonious Cities for Our Future.” The concept: “awareness, exploration, partnership, mobilization and sustainability”, the goal: to create cities that are “people-friendly”.
Active sessions continued throughout the day. Public forums on climate change, a panel discussion on public-private partnerships, and roundtable meetings on ecology and economy, gender-friendly cities, urban services, and cross-regional cooperation were among the topics discussed. Panelists and presenters included mayors from the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Nepal; specialists from the public sector; experts from United Nations agencies and other international organizations, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank.
The World Bank organized a roundtable session entitled “Bridging the Gap between Ecology and Economy”, where World Bank Finance Economics & Urban Department Lead Urban Specialist Hiroaki Suzuki led discussion on the bank’s new urban development business program: the “Eco2 Cities Program”, “Ecological Cities as Economic Cities”. Details are explained in the recently published Eco2 Book which can be downloaded from www.worldbank.org/eco2 or by clicking “Eco2 Cities Program”.
Aimed at helping cities in developing countries achieve greater environmental and economic sustainability, the program has developed an analytical and operational framework that can be used across the globe in working toward sustainability targets.
Through our partnership, CITYNET and TDLC will continue to work together in the sharing and dissemination of knowledge and experience. In order to enhance our efforts in capacity-building, we are seeking ways to further pursue the development and delivery of effectively structured training courses, through the use of distance learning methods.
At CITYNET Yokohama Congress 2009, TDLC is providing footage on some of the event programs through Video on Demand. The following video footage will soon be available on our Jointokyo video streaming page.
