Orphan Meets Artist
story from Tokyo Development Learning Centerrelated news stories

Under the concept of “Fun Learning,” TDLC’s “Orphan Meets Artist” began in 2008, set to use videoconferencing and ICT to create artistic opportunity for orphans in developing countries.
This program provides a chance for children to experience the joy of expression, and to share through artistic experimentation and creative development. It aims to draw out and enrich their spirit.
1. Uganda Workshop
The program first began as a project for AIDS orphans in Uganda, organized jointly with Japanese artist and university dean Tatsuo Miyajima and his students. Miyajima flew to Uganda and held a local workshop in January 2009, and his experience was then shared with a larger audience at a symposium in Tokyo in July.

2. Cambodia Videoconference Workshop
The second part of the program focused on HIV/AIDS orphans in Cambodia. In collaboration with Tokyo Wonder Site, TDLC organized two videoconference workshops for kids in Phnom Penh, where they received instruction from artists Chikara Matsumoto and Daisuke Nagaoka in Tokyo by video connection.
The children were coached on drawing pictures and presenting their work through video connection. Images captured on video were grabbed at a third Tokyo session and made into a flip book, later sent to the kids as presents.

3. Kenya Workshop Videoconference
A videoconference reporting session was underway at TDLC on January 13, 2010, sharing information on an art workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya earlier in the month.
Connected from Nairobi, emerging Japanese artist Yoshinari Nishio talked about his January 6 workshop, where he’d collected used clothing to create a gigantic piece of patchwork, together with local AIDS orphans. Workshop participants gathered at the World Bank Kenya office for the videoconference, connected with Tokyo, watched a video of the workshop, and discussed art and development.
